Icebreaking Advisory: Shippagan and Caraquet Areas
Please be advised that the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) icebreaker CCGS Judy Lamarsh will conduct icebreaking operations in the Shippagan and Caraquet areas starting Sunday, March 26, 2023. The icebreaker will leave a wake of open water behind it. Please stay a safe distance from the vessel and its path, as cracks can extend some distance from the vessel as it moves. Even refrozen ice will remain unstable for hours or days after the icebreaker has left the area.
The Canadian Coast Guard reminds the public that venturing onto the ice can be very dangerous and suggests familiarizing themselves with its ice safety tips.
Please remove movable equipment before icebreaking activities and protect permanent and non-movable property. Depending on conditions, ice can be pushed rather than broken, and ice can crack or break far from where the icebreaker is working.
Please take appropriate measures to notify area residents who might use the ice for any purpose.
